Certain genes are labelled dominant genes because they mask the effect of the other gene in a pair; thus, if you have one dominant gene for a characteristic, you will have that characteristic.  However, there are not many human characteristics that depend on a single gene.

In relation to eye colour, there are two types of genes: those for brown eyes, and those for blue eyes.  The gene for brown eyes is dominant and that for blue eyes is recessive.
